Excitement filled the Buck Shaffer Theater at the Porterville Memorial Auditorium as family members and friends gathered to celebrate the Butterfield Charter School Class of 2026 during their commencement ceremony on Tuesday evening.
Long before the ceremony began, graduates lined up outside the auditorium while proud family members stopped to take photographs and call out words of encouragement. Inside, Butterfield staff members hurried through last-minute preparations, and parents took hurried family photo opportunities as anticipation for the graduates to walk into the building built.
By 6 p.m., the auditorium was packed, with even balcony seating filled as attendees waited for the ceremony to begin. Soon after, Jessica Facio, Butterfield Charter School Director, welcomed the massive crowd and asked them to rise for the presentation of the colors by the Porterville Military Academy Color Guard.
Following the presentation, the playing of the National Anthem, and a flag salute led by graduate Maria Teresa Hernandez Lopez, Facio recognized Butterfield Charter School teachers and staff for their contributions to the Class of 2026’s success.
Representatives from the Porterville Unified School District joined the celebration, including Superintendent Dr. Nate Nelson, Assistant Superintendent Brad Rohrbach, Assistant Superintendent Martha Stuemky, and Board Trustee Felipe Martinez.
The commencement ceremony moved quickly with student speaker Neveha Burlanga reflecting on the unique educational journey shared by many members of her graduating class.
"Our journey to this stage didn't follow the usual routine," Burlanga said. "It was discipline when no one was watching, motivation on days when it was easier to stop, and a lot of self-direction. But it also gave us something unique, the ability to take ownership of our education."
Burlanga spoke about the challenges faced during high school and the support found at Butterfield Charter School.
"My high school experience was very rocky, with a lot of ups and downs," Burlanga said. "Going from traditional classrooms to Butterfield helped me in ways that I never knew I needed. Butterfield gave me the direction and guidance that I couldn't find in any other school program."
She thanked teachers, counselors, and staff members for helping students grow and become involved in school activities, and expressed gratitude to her family members who encouraged her journey.
"I would like to give a big thank you to my mom and grandma because no matter how hard things were for me, they always had my back and were some of my biggest supporters through it all," Burlanga said.
Looking ahead to the future, Burlanga reminded classmates graduation marks a new beginning.
"This isn't the end of our stories, it's just the turning of a page," Burlanga said. "I can't wait to see where each of our journeys leads."
Following the student address, Facio congratulated the graduates on their accomplishments.
"Tonight, we celebrate your accomplishments as graduates of Butterfield Charter School," Facio told the Class of 2026. "These diplomas represent hard work, determination, and growth. We are proud of all that you have accomplished and excited for what lies ahead."
The ceremony concluded with district officials and school administrators presenting diplomas as 224 graduates crossed the stage to the cheers of family, friends, and their fellow classmates.
As the final names were called and the graduates were invited to turn their tassels, the excitement that had filled the auditorium throughout the evening gave way to reflection and celebration.
The Class of 2026 leaves Butterfield Charter School with stories of resilience, self-discipline, and growth, carrying with them the lessons learned through an unconventional educational journey.
