Unforgettable journey: Strathmore High graduates celebrated

Family members, friends, teachers, and staff filled the Buck Shaffer Theater at the Porterville Memorial Auditorium on Thursday evening as Strathmore High School celebrated the graduation of the Class of 2026, honoring students for their academic achievements, leadership, and perseverance.

The ceremony began with the presentation of colors by the CA Cadet Corps 3rd Brigade, and the Pledge of Allegiance led by graduate Jazmine Valdovinos, followed by a performance of the national anthem by the Strathmore High Spartan Band.

Principal Andrew Peterson welcomed attendees and praised the graduating class for the relationships they built and the accomplishments they achieved during their four years at Strathmore High School.

“Congratulations, Class of 2026,” Peterson said. “You have made this a great and unforgettable journey.”

Peterson also thanked families for entrusting the school with their students’ education and encouraged graduates to carry the lessons they learned at Strathmore High into their future endeavors.

Student speaker Cruz Martinez reflected on the journey that brought the class to graduation day, thanking teachers, staff, family members, and classmates for their support.

“After four long years of high school, we have finally made it to our last day,” Martinez said. “As our high school journey comes to an end, let us celebrate this great achievement as it represents the beginning of a new chapter of our lives.”

Throughout the evening, several school officials recognized students for outstanding academic and extracurricular accomplishments.

Dean of Counseling Armando Oseguera led the student recognition portion of the ceremony by reading names of those graduating as California Scholastic Federation Sealbearers, students receiving the Golden State Seal Merit Diploma, AVID graduates and recipients of the State Seal of Biliteracy.

Peterson followed Osegura and recognized the students graduating as members of the Future Farmers of America chapters, before inviting Vice Principal Evelia Alvarez to recognize the students who completed the Emerging Agriculture Technology pathway and for earning the California Seal of Civic Engagement.

The evening also featured remarks from Salutatorian Taeghen Jensen, who encouraged classmates to embrace the future with confidence and resilience.

“Never doubt yourselves,” Jensen told her classmates. “Life will bring challenges, and it’s OK to be scared, but face each moment with strength and belief that you will make it through.”

Jensen reflected on the unique experiences of the Class of 2026, including overcoming educational disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic during their middle school years.

“Many of us entered high school still trying to catch up,” Jensen said. “But from the moment we stepped onto campus, we began learning, growing, and becoming stronger.”

As diplomas were awarded, graduates shared messages of gratitude for family members, teachers, and mentors who helped them reach the milestone. Many announced plans to attend colleges and universities throughout California, pursue careers in healthcare, education, agriculture, business, public safety, or enter the workforce and skilled trades.

The ceremony concluded with the traditional turning of the tassels as graduates moved them from the right side of their caps to the left.

“On behalf of the Porterville Unified School District Governing Board of Trustees and the Superintendent, I now pronounce the Strathmore High School Class of 2026 graduated,” Peterson announced.

Cheers erupted from the crowd as the newly graduated Spartans celebrated the culmination of their high school careers and the beginning of the next chapter in their lives.
