Cheers echoed throughout the Buck Shaffer Theater at the Porterville Memorial Auditorium as the Harmony Magnet Academy Class of 2026 celebrated their graduation on Friday evening before a packed crowd of family members, friends, teachers, and community supporters.
Before the ceremony began, a slideshow highlighted graduating seniors and their plans for life after high school while attendees filled every available seat, leaving only seating available in the balcony. Excitement continued to build as graduates entered the auditorium to enthusiastic applause and cheers from loved ones.
The ceremony opened with the presentation of the colors by the Porterville Military Academy, the Pledge of Allegiance, and a performance of the national anthem by the Harmony Magnet Academy Advanced and Intermediate orchestras.
Principal Jeff Brown welcomed attendees and recognized the many individuals who helped make the graduates' success possible, including district administrators, governing board members, community partners, faculty, and staff.
Addressing the graduating class, Brown encouraged students to face the future with confidence.
"The difference between the possible and the impossible is a person's determination," he said. "Believe that you are going to do great things and believe that you will always overcome obstacles."
Associated Student Body President Gianna Rohrbach reflected on a school year centered around the theme "Uknight," highlighting campus traditions, student activities, and the sense of community built among students.
"We truly don't recognize the significance of a moment until it becomes a memory," Rorhbach said. "Everyone has their own path, so do what you love."
Throughout the evening, a series of 11 valedictorians shared personal stories, lessons learned, and words of encouragement for their classmates.
The HMA class of 2026 valedictorians included Dylan Aguayo Gonzalez, Lizet Corona, Isabela Cross, Anna De Haan, Mary Froula, Molly Gillis, Samantha Alysson Oracion, Allison Plumlee, Julian Ramirez Leon, Zach Tolentino, and Nicolas Wilkinson.
Aguayo, the first valedictorian to address the room, spoke about growth and self-discovery, urging graduates to embrace change as they define who they want to become. Other speakers emphasized the importance of kindness, describing compassion and grace as some of life's greatest strengths.
Most of the student speakers reflected on perseverance, education, friendship, faith, and personal growth. Several thanked family members, teachers, and classmates for helping them navigate the challenges of high school while preparing for the future.
Senior Class President Cynthiareli Cervantes Romero delivered the final student address of the evening, encouraging classmates to embrace uncertainty and appreciate the memories they created together.
"We do not need to know all the answers to know that we will be OK," she said. "We are not defined by our endings, but rather by the journey it took to get where we are."
Following the student speeches, Porterville Unified School District board trustees Donna Berry, Rudy Ruiz, and Tom Velasquez, along with Superintendent Dr. Nate Nelson, formally certified the seniors had met graduation requirements and presented diplomas to the Class of 2026.
The ceremony reached its emotional peak when graduates stood together and moved their tassels from right to left, officially marking their transition from students to alumni.
As cheers filled the auditorium and families celebrated from the stands, Harmony Magnet Academy's newest graduates prepared to begin the next chapter of their lives — heading to colleges, trade schools, military service, and careers across the country.
For the Class of 2026, the evening marked not only the end of their high school journey but the beginning of countless new opportunities ahead.
