PUSD Superintendent Dr. Ken Gibbs Announces Retirement

Porterville Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Ken Gibbs has announced his retirement, effective July 1. Dr. Nate Nelson, currently the PUSD Assistant Superintendent for Business Services, was named as the new superintendent for Porterville Unified by the PUSD Governing Board, effective July 1.

“I would like to thank the Board of Trustees and the staff of PUSD for their support over the years,” Gibbs said. “Together, we have been able to improve on an already excellent district. I am confident that Dr. Nelson as superintendent will continue to provide our students with a world-class education.”

“We would like to thank Dr. Gibbs for his great work with the district,” PUSD Governing Board President Pete Lara, Jr., said. “His positive goals for our students will continue in the future and he always will be a valued member of our family. We believe it will be a seamless transition to Dr. Nelson, who will continue the same goals set for our district.”

Gibbs has served as PUSD superintendent since 2016, working a total of 22 years for the district. Prior to his role as superintendent, Gibbs spent 15 years as the assistant superintendent for business services and five years as PUSD’s director of technology.

Nelson is in his 19th year with Porterville Unified. He has been the assistant superintendent for business services since 2016 after serving as the assistant superintendent for human resources since 2012 and director of technology since 2005. He earned his master’s degree in business administration from Fresno State in 2005 before earning his doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Southern California (USC) in 2011.
