A group of middle school students from Porterville Military Academy has achieved a milestone worthy of celebration. The English Language Development class recently published an original children’s book through the WRiTE BRAiN program — a project that highlights the power of student voice, creativity, and collaboration.
Guided by their teacher, Shawny Bledsaw, the students embarked on a months-long journey that blended storytelling with academic rigor. Using WRiTE BRAiN’s scaffolded tools, they brainstormed, drafted, revised, and ultimately published a high-quality book designed for early readers. Each student played a vital role, contributing ideas, refining vocabulary, and ensuring their narrative wasn't only engaging but educational. The resulting publication showcases vibrant illustrations and student-crafted dialogue, emphasizing themes of friendship, resilience, and curiosity.
In recognition of their exceptional efforts, the students will receive the Commandant of Cadets Citation Ribbon. This award is granted for exceptional service beyond the scope of other awards, and in this case, acknowledges the students’ activation of core academic and life skills: creativity, critical thinking, comprehension, communication, and collaboration.
"This project allowed our students to express themselves as authors while supporting literacy for younger readers," said Bledsaw. “They demonstrated leadership, perseverance, and a commitment to excellence. These cadets are role models.”
The ceremony honoring the students will take place later this spring, with families, faculty, and school leadership in attendance.
