Buck Shaffer Theater - Porterville Memorial Auditorium

The Porterville Memorial Auditorium (415 W. Olive Ave.) on the Porterville High School campus is available for rental to the general public.

The auditorium was renamed with the addition "Buck Shaffer Theater," named after legendary Porterville High School band director Buck Shaffer. In 1953, Shaffer moved from West Virginia to become the Panthers' director and immediately brought acclaim to the city, becoming one of the first bands in California to appear on television. Shaffer and the Panthers' band performed at the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley, Calif., the Seattle World's Fair, five Rose Parades and America's bicentennial celebration in 1976 in New York, Washington, Boston and Philadelphia. He would take the band on a similar trip in 1984 and 1990, where the band performed at the famous Carnegie Hall in New York City. Shaffer retired in 1990 after 37 years as the Porterville High School band director.
